Context
A European agricultural cooperative wanted to improve resource efficiency across 120 member farms, using technology to compete with larger industrial operations on productivity while reducing environmental impact.
The Challenge
Rural farms have limited internet connectivity. Sensors needed to run for weeks on battery power. Farmers had no technical background — the UX had to be as simple as a weather app while the backend handled complex spatial and temporal data fusion.
The Solution
Deployed LoRaWAN sensor networks across farm land, with gateway nodes running local ML inference. A mobile-first React Native app provided farmers with simple irrigation and fertilization recommendations. Satellite imagery from Sentinel-2 was processed weekly to update crop health models.
Methodology
- LoRaWAN for low-power, long-range sensor communication
- On-device inference for real-time irrigation decisions without cloud dependency
- Satellite imagery integration via Sentinel Hub API for vegetation index computation
- Human-centered design: 3 rounds of farmer user testing before launch
Impact
Deployed across 120 farms in France and Germany. Average water usage reduced 28%. Yield increased 15% in the first growing season. Shortlisted for EU AgriTech Innovation Award 2023.
